A unique, one-off piece featuring an intricate mandala pattern in a sturdy hand crafted oak base.
This piece was made as a test for a larger commission for an Indian wedding, and took many many hours of cutting and painstakingly intricate painting.
This piece has been made using multiple kiln firings to build up the depth of colours and add different effects. All the glass has been cut by hand and painted using traditional stained glass painting techniques.
A mandala is a circular geometric design with repeating desdigns that radiate from a central point, inspired by the art of Hindu and Buddhist cultures.
This piece starts with a small sunflower in the centre, the surrounding layer is an intricate pattern of tiny blue bubbles which catch the light, inspired by henna designs. This bubble effect is achieved by firing copper oxide powder sandwiched between glass at around 815 degrees c.
Surrounding this layer is a dramatic spray of peacock feathers made from multiple layers of cut coloured glass with a sparkling dark blue metallic centre using dichroic glass. The outer layer features a bright splash of yellow with more henna inspired designs
The wood base is an organic free-form, assymetrical shape, hand crafted from European oak.
The glass has been firmly siliconed into the heavy wooden base, giving excellent stability so it can be displayed anywhere.
Glass can look very different depending on where it is displayed and the lighting around it, I recommend trying different locations! Please note that a lighter coloured background will show the colours off at their best. This particular piece has metallic blue elements which show up when light is shining on the front it, however when there is stronger light behind it this metallic effect will not show.
